Strategies to Go

Jen Serravallo’s Strategies to Go is a teacher-facing web app companion to the author’s best-selling reading and writing instruction series (dual-language English and Spanish). It provides the Strategies in a searchable format with flexible and intuitive note taking and student rostering features for lesson planning and progress monitoring. I led the product development, applying Lean principles, from initial concept through prototyping, field testing, and launch. I built a functional prototype using Zoho Creator in order to respond nimbly to author feedback and cut development time and expense during iteration. I coordinated a series of field tests and surveys with the marketing director to identify market needs, which were incorporated into the user stories and requirements for the live product build. I was the point of contact for all vendor communication, including scrum sessions and weekly deep dives, and I collaborated directly with their designer on all UX features using Figma and Adobe Photoshop. I facilitated integration with Heinemann’s data management platform, which was itself still in development.

Below is a gallery of screen shots from the fully-functional prototype app, built in Zoho Creator. Prototyping with a no-code tool like Zoho Creator allowed me to iterate much more quickly so I was able to respond to author feedback. We were then able to focus test the prototype with several hundred customers of the print version and conduct a survey regarding a proposed freemium model with free and subscription-only features.

Below are some “Pro Tip” explainer videos that highlight different features of the final app.

Units of Study Virtual Teaching Resources

Lucy Calkins & Teachers College: Units of Study Virtual Teaching Resources are a library of student-facing lesson videos produced in response to the shift to remote instruction for the 2020-21 school year. The product was conceived in May 2020. After defining business goals and requirements in consultation with stakeholders, I collaborated with the internal team to develop the data schema, permissions, UX/UI, and systems integration. I built a custom CMS to feed the SQL database and to facilitate production of 3000+ videos and 1000 support resources on an extremely aggressive schedule. The product launched on time ten weeks later and grossed over $14 million in sales in its first four months.

Below are some screen shots of the product. Teachers had access to the full library of videos. Students could watch individual videos shared by the teacher through a password-protected viewer. The sharing functionality was designed to provide maximum simplicity and flexibility for the wide variety of classroom management tools in use.

Fountas & Pinnell Classroom Online Resources

The Online Resources site supports Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell’s multi-collection literacy instruction system of nearly 10,000 lessons. It provides a searchable and filterable interface to all the resources, customizable user folders for resource organization, and a student-accessible listening library of audio books for the Shared Reading collection. In 2020, in response to the pandemic, it was expanded to include ebook versions of the readers to support remote instruction.
